News Article on Drew Smith after beating state ranked Trotwood-Madison Rams

On the Job Training: Talk a baptism by fire.

Sophomore guard Drew Smith got the first start of his varsity career last week when he was inserted into the starting line-up against Trotwood, which featured one of the better defensive lines the Trojans will face all season.

Despite going up against bigger, faster, more experienced linemen, Burgbacher said the 6-foot-1, 231-pound sophomore had a fine showing.

“Drew stepped in and did a nice job,” Burgbacher said. “That’s one thing we preach all the time — you’ve got to play and get that experience on Saturdays (in junior varsity games), because you’ll never know when we need you to step up and play on Fridays.

“Watching the film from the game, we saw some things he needs to improve on, but we also saw a lot of things he did really well. Going up against a very good defensive line, for the most part he held his own. He did well and fit right in.”
